Summary from Amazon:

The Ice Dragon is an enchanting tale of courage and sacrifice for young readers and adults by the wildly popular author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Song of Ice and Fire series, George R.R. Martin. Lavish illustrations by acclaimed artist Luis Royo enrich this captivating and heartwarming story of a young girl and her dragon.

In the world of A Song of Ice and Fire the ice dragon was a creature of legend and fear, for no man had ever tamed one. When it flew overhead, it left in its wake desolate cold and frozen land. But Adara was not afraid. For Adara was a winter child, born during the worst freeze that anyone, even the Old Ones, could remember.

Adara could not remember the first time she had seen the ice dragon. It seemed that it had always been in her life, glimpsed from afar as she played in the frigid snow long after the other children had fled the cold. In her fourth year she touched it, and in her fifth year she rode upon its broad, chilled back for the first time. Then, in her seventh year, on a calm summer day, fiery dragons from the North swooped down upon the peaceful farm that was Adara’s home. And only a winter child—and the ice dragon who loved her—could save her world from utter destruction.

C’s Review of The Ice Dragon

C, KIDoosh BloggerThis book is about a girl named Adara. She has a brother, Geoff and a sister, Teri. Adara is fascinated with the Ice dragon. Every winter the Ice Dragon would fly over the town. However unlike all the other Dragons, the townsfolk were afraid of this dragon. They tried to scare the Ice Dragon away in various ways to stop the ice Dragon from coming over the town but it never worked. No one knew whether it was the Ice Dragon that brought the cold or the cold that brought the Ice Dragon.

On Adara’s 4th year, she touched the Ice Dragon. She was able to do this because she had a cold heart so she wouldn’t hurt or melt the Ice creatures. Every year the Ice Dragon would look for Adara in the same place. In her 5th year she rode the ice dragon. On her 7th year, the big war going throughout the country escalates and fiery dragons ride over her father’s farm ridden by the enemy. Only the Ice Dragon can stop them from destroying her homeland.

S’s Review of The Ice Dragon

S, KIDoosh Blogger and Mum to C and M

As a huge Game of Thrones fan, I was pleasantly surprised to find George RR Martin’s book for children, The Ice Dragon. And, it didn’t disappoint, though it’s a very short read (I managed to finish the book within an hour).

The plot seemed simplistic and straightforward, but there is more to the story than one would first expect. To me, the biggest win was reading the prose, which is quite lyrical. It almost felt as though I was savouring a very long prosaic poem.

It was an interesting book for children, though C did ask a lot of questions when he first finished the book. It was a great opportunity to introduce a different kind of reading material for him.

Oh, and yes, the illustrations by Luis Royo are gorgeous. It’s definitely a book worth reading. And, I’d love to read more about Adara!
